The new client

A growing share of API consumers are not developers. They are operators using AI coding agents to integrate your API by prompting. They cannot read your OpenAPI spec and infer that beneficiary must be created before payment. Their agent can, if you give it the right material.

What AI agents need

  • A validated, ordered path. Step 1 create customer, step 2 add beneficiary, step 3 create payment. Dependencies resolved, required fields listed.
  • Real example payloads that work in sandbox today, not screenshots from two versions ago.
  • Deterministic error catalog. What a 429 means, what a 422 on this endpoint means, and what to do about each.
  • A sandbox that responds honestly. If the sandbox behaves differently from production, the agent learns the wrong lessons.

What this means for providers

  • Publish machine-readable tutorials alongside human docs
  • Keep OpenAPI specs accurate; agents read them directly
  • Validate every tutorial against the live sandbox on every API version change
  • Surface the same known-issue knowledge base to agents as to humans

The providers who adapt will onboard a segment of clients their competitors literally cannot serve.
